Epigraphic Center

The Epigraphic Center in Vidin is one of the most fascinating places to encounter the written history of Northwestern Bulgaria. It is housed in a restored building—an architectural cultural monument of local significance—constructed more than 200 years ago. Originally, the building had a strictly practical and administrative function, serving as an Ottoman grain warehouse for storing cereals collected as the “tithe” tax from the local Bulgarian population.

Today, the building has been given an entirely new life. Thanks to the European-funded project “Providing Public Access to a Cultural Monument Building – Turkish Warehouse and Establishment of an Epigraphic Center,” implemented under the program “Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Arts,” it has been restored and adapted into a modern museum center. The space meets contemporary requirements for the preservation and exhibition of cultural heritage while retaining its authentic architectural appearance.

The exhibition presents 38 movable archaeological and epigraphic monuments, tracing the development of the region from Antiquity to the 19th century. Stone inscriptions, votive reliefs, and other artifacts reveal aspects of religious life, administrative practices, and the everyday existence of the people who inhabited Vidin and its surroundings over the centuries.

Located in close proximity to Baba Vida Fortress, the Epigraphic Center naturally forms part of a unified historical complex. A visit to the center complements a walk through the medieval fortress and offers a deeper insight into the cultural layers of the city. This makes it a must-see stop for anyone wishing to explore Vidin not only as a fortified town, but also as an important cultural and historical center.
